Originally released during the formative years of Kompakt’s influential Pop Ambient era, IN MOLL introduced Guentner’s unmistakable sound: delicate melodic motifs, immersive atmospheres, and spacious compositions that helped define a generation of ambient electronic music. Twenty-five years later, the album remains as emotionally resonant and forward-thinking as ever.
The anniversary edition has been newly remastered in full analogue by composer, producer, and mastering engineer Rafael Anton Irisarri, founder of Black Knoll Studio and Black Knoll Editions, whose mastering credits include Ryuichi Sakamoto, William Basinski, Terry Riley, Grouper, and Juliana Barwick. It presents the most complete version of the album to date, restoring the long-missing IN MOLL 4 track to vinyl for the first time. A completely redesigned visual presentation by Guentner accompanies the release.
Few ambient albums have earned the level of admiration that IN MOLL continues to receive. Kompakt co-founder Michael Mayer recalls discovering Guentner’s early demo while wandering through Cologne with Wolfgang Voigt, describing it as “outrageously beautiful,” while Voigt calls Guentner to be “one of the first and most important ambient artists” in Kompakt’s history. Music critic and former Pitchfork Editor-in-Chief Mark Richardson has similarly praised the record as “one of the finest ambient releases of the 00s.”
Born in Regensburg, Germany, Markus Guentner has spent more than two decades shaping the language of contemporary ambient music. His catalogue spans releases for Kompakt, Affin, Sending Orbs, and A Strangely Isolated Place, alongside collaborations with artists including Rafael Anton Irisarri, Julia Kent, Brock Van Wey (bvdub), Joachim Spieth, and zakè. His influence continues to resonate across ambient, neoclassical, and experimental electronic music today.
The 25th Anniversary Edition of IN MOLL is available for pre-order now and will be released on November 6, 2026, digitally and as a limited-edition black and white vinyl through Black Knoll Editions.
