The atmosphere and running order of Depeche Mode’s Black Celebration provide the starting point for BC: A novel inspired by Black Celebration, an original work of fiction by Jordi Gaxiola, published independently through In Nebula Lux.

Set in Basildon in 1986, BC follows a story of love, memory and devotion. Its opening page is dated March 17, 1986, the day the album was released. Rain, industrial surroundings and the music’s cold intimacy shape a world in which two young people keep choosing each other.

Gaxiola has been a Depeche Mode fan since the age of thirteen. The idea for the novel began in the year before Black Celebration’s fortieth anniversary, as a way to celebrate a record that had remained important to him since adolescence.

“Black Celebration is one of my favorite albums. It is cold and intimate at once, which is a hard thing to pull off,” Gaxiola says.

The chapters follow the sequence of the US edition he grew up listening to, including “But Not Tonight”. Song titles and atmosphere became prompts for the narrative: the vulnerability of “A Question of Lust”, the urgency of “A Question of Time” and the mourning suggested by “Dressed in Black”.

The novel develops its own fictional characters and story rather than retelling the lyrics. The album’s sequence serves as a framework for changes in pace, tension and intimacy, carrying the experience of listening to a complete record into another form.

BC is currently available in English on Amazon in Kindle, paperback and hardcover editions. It is an independent work and is not an official Depeche Mode publication.
