Too Much Light, the Vancouver-based audiovisual Goth pop project of Jenny Kirby (they/them), Sean Keane (he/him) and Parris Florence (she/her) just released a timely anti-capitalist mash up of two classic gothic works, Nine Inch Nails' “Head Like A Hole” and their queer twist on the imagery from the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol.” The video features Dickensian ghosts in drag. Kirby, who identifies as non-binary and pansexual, shows up as an androgynous Jacob Marley's ghost. Florence portrays drag king version of the Ghost of Christmas Present and Spencer Densmore plays a drag queen version of the Ghost of Christmas Past. The straight couples portrayed are also intentionally interracial. Other local artists within Vancouver's dark alternative music scene appear in the video — Stephen Hughes of Bleached Heat and Bruce Wilson of RxHx.
The video was directed by Erik Gustafson (Adoration Destroyed, Eva X, Skull Cultist), Production Design by Jenny Kirby (Borg Queen, Too Much Light) whose film credits include, Avatar: The Last Airbender S1, Woman of the Hour and The Mysterious Benedict Society S1. The process was a true Dickensian exercise of constraint in lean times. Working in collaboration with Erik we were able to shoot the video in 2 days in Jenny’s living room using all thrifted and handmade costumes, props and set dec.
