François Carrier, Michel Lambert, Tomek Gadecki, Marcin Bozek: Wide

More reviews by
During the years François Carrier has released a number of release with whom has established himself as an interesting voice in Free Jazz. This new album documents a concert at MÓZG in Bydgoszcz, Poland, and features the canonical duo of François Carrier and Michel Lambert in a dialogue with Tomek Gadecki and Marcin Bozek which has the task to add a sense of novelty to the whole.
The concert is divided in three section: "Wide" revolves around the dialogue between alto and tenor saxophone with the rhythmic section as a support, at least for the first part, until a solo interlude by Carrier introduces the second half of the track where the use of the french horn by Bozek marks a section where there's a slight timbre research juxtaposed to a call and response. The third part is a return to the form of the first part. "Radiancy" is a movement from an almost lyrical first part based on slow melodic lines by the saxophones to a second part based of faster lines which give musical space to the rhythmic section to escape from the role of accompanyment. "Leeway" lasts just over half an hour and ebbs and flows between quiet and fast moments and shows, apart from the technical skills, the players sense of measure to give a moment for everyone.
Even without any particular novelty in its form, this release transmits the joy of playing together of the artist and this quirk, in times of inflexible individualism, get some fresh air to the listener. Recommended for fans of free jazz.

Angst78 is a collaboration between Patryk Ggniewicz (Revisq) and Lukasz Szalankiewicz (Zenial) and this release is naïvely presented as a compilation of tracks composed between 2013 and 2019. As neither Revisq nor Zenial has recorded in the same cities, it's rather obvious that the collaboration is internet based, so it's not taken for granted that this release could sound as a cohesive whole.
As the first track starts the listener is introduced into a sort of techno ambient vaguely reminiscent of '90s ambient-house at least by the wide sound and the catchy melodic lines. As the album advances, apart from episodic incursion towards IDM territories the structure is so clearly defined that even the three remixes of this release, Fisherboyz. Dawid Chrapla and Dominik ochowski, sound like regular tracks. This is due to a musical form (a dancey beat, a catchy line of synth and elaborate textures) that doesn't need particular tricks if the balance is carefully set.
Somebody could argue that this release is another in an infinite series, and he forgets that this is not a matter of innovation but of craft i.e., how to sound new using an old form. This is a remarkable example of this task. Recommended for fans of the genre.

The name of the project, with a handful of variations, is the nom de plume of Evgeny Savenko which was heard in a dream and describes quite well his music. "A Sherpa's Sleep is More Milk Music" is an ambient release with a certain equilibrium between synthetic parts and organic ones, usually from field recordings, and its pieces are long tracks with a tranquil development.
At first sight, this release could seems along the path of certain dark ambient which makes an heavy use of foley sound to obtain an immersive environment, however this music is not narrative but evocative i.e., it's more open to the free interpretation of the listener, moreover the field recording is not a mere sound effect but it's a central element of the sound construction. It has to be noted that some moments includes some elements i.e.,ritual percussions, hinting towards a spiritual reference of the music so it's not surprising that "Pozdravleniya" closes this release with meditative, rather than hypnotic, drones.
This release is practically a sure pick for all fans of ambient music as it doesn't have a single moment of boredom even in a track which last 24 minutes sharp. Truly recommended.

“Composited Reality”, the third collaborative release by Pas Musique & Rapoon, was released in 2018 on USB stick and now it's available in CD from Zoharum which nowadays releases much of Rapoon music. This release consists of six new tracks and field recording which are mixed in a track lasting a little more than 52 minutes at the threshold between experimental music and field recordings.
The piece starts in a canonical Rapoon with hypnotic tones on a Middle Eastern base, the second part is based on noise generators and loops, the third part is mostly based on loops; sparse wooden percussions introduce the fourth part of the track which seems more ambient oriented until swarming musical cells emerge and last until a texture introduces complex tones that ebb and flow and vanishes when a carillon is used as a way to mark a more structured part based on field recordings and samples, followed by a more static part based on beats and percussive loops. The last minutes of this release are filled by abstract sound impressions and a final part which slowly return to a form close to the beginning of the track.
This release struggles a little bit to pique the interest of the listener during the static phases, however it reminds the listener about the assembled nature of reality when it's used for artistic purposed. A nice release for fans.

NNHMN is a duo from Berlin whose music is a synth electronic vaguely gothic or new wave and "church of no religion" is presented by the label as a form of gothic i.e., non Christian, ceremony. The critic of religion a common topic in section of the dark scene is conveyed mostly by the nice artwork based on symbols.
Their music is rooted in the form based on the triad vocals, synth and drum machine and while undoubtedly evocative at its best, it's sometimes a little bit commonly known. A good half of this release is focused on rhythmic beats more or less suitable for dance floor while the rest is concerned with the construction of pseudo religious atmosphere due to the vocal by Lee which are truly effective in this purpose with aid of effects.
This is that kind of release that could be well appreciated by fans of the genre that will be bound by the craft in the making but the other could remain puzzled by the lack of novelty. It's worth a listen.
