This awesome long-lasting experimental recording, by which Brisbane-based composer and pianist Erik Griswold shares with listeners the magic of a midsummer night full moon - the one and the leading days preceding it between 2nd and 6th July 2020 -, can be considered a possible case of piano lycanthropy. In order to forge this 40-minutes lasting output, he combined the layers made by the tunes coming from 16 detuned pianos, whose voices got overdubbed in the Piano Mill, a minimalist tower that Erik projected together with architect Bruce Wolfe (in matching the album title, the situation for the recording and the surname of his collaborator, choice was never more apt!) and artistic director Vanessa Tomlinson and that was constructed in Wilson's Downfall, a remote place in the forest of New South Wales (Australia). This unusual chorus of pianos turned into a sort of howling within a place that managed to multiple and superimpose them, so that to get shape-shifted into a sort of sustaining instrument. In Erik's own words, "Wolf Moon develops ideas first heard in “All’s grist that comes to the mill,” taking the sustained microtonality of “The Hive” and enlarging it onto a vastly larger canvas. It is also a natural complement to the Wallpaper Music series, which uses prepared and bowed piano and a long form approach to expand the spectrum of the piano". To be praised also the mastering by Lawrence English, that certainly fostered the awesome listening experience, crafted by Erik in that likewise awesome recording place. An enjoyable full-moon romance.
