I never heard of this artist before but the album cover and lay out kind of remind me of Spinal Tap's album cover (It's like, how much more black could this be? and the answer is none. None more black.) You kind of know what you are in for with titles like “My Right Testicle is Swollen for Two Weeks” and “If Jesus Wasn't Jewish He Probably Would Have Loved Me.” It's clear that this artist isn't exactly taking themselves too seriously, which I like a lot. This is also reflected in the label’s description of this work: “A mix of cold, violent dreamscapes, with beautifully broken emotional sounds and melodies. He is puzzle. He has a fetish for muppets and wants to give your mom a hug. So listen hard and listen well cause this music is a glimpse into pieces reflected through time...”
On to the music itself. This is a lot of interesting experimental music. You have to love a person who plays the line noise and then creates a beat with the with whatever they've got laying around. This has a beat, but it isn't really danceable, at least not in the traditional sense. “Smiling With No Teeth” opens it up with the feel of a beat while the rest of the track components are completely off-kilter and out of sync. It works though, and the tracks themselves are interesting and engage. When we get to “My Right Testicle is Swollen for Two Weeks,” we get a piano piece that at first glance seems sort of out of place. It's actually kind of pretty, but static starts creeping in and the piano piece gets more and more distorted. Later on, we have tracks like “Fear the Lumpiax,” which is spastic, like a slower Venetian Snares. On “How to Thwart the Lumpiax,” we end up with some soundscapes without a beat but lots of bass tones that resonate your speakers.
“Kung May Bayag Ang Lola Ko Di Lolo Ko Na Siya” is actually one of my favorite pieces on the desk, with a slow-moving plotting guitar distorted guitar and a simple drum beat. The overall effect is kind of hypnotic and quite enjoyable.
Overall, this disc is pretty interesting, and not quite what I expected. It made for a nice soundtrack as I drove around, and if you want something is going to stress test your speakers in your car, this is a good choice.
