I had previously reviewed Signalstoerung’s release on Oxidation, so I was interested to see what this one would be like. This consists of four tracks that are labeled IDR1 through IDR4, with little context, so let’s dive on in.
IDR1 is heavy bass and rhythmic noise with a slow, plodding feel to it. It is minimal, but still manages to remain interesting, with a kind of hypnotic feel to it. IDR2 is screeching noise that sounds like 10 cars doing burnouts in unison with a simple melody line of synth. I appreciate what he's doing here, but it wasn't really my cup of tea. IDR3 is a simple drum and synth line over field recordings of a crowd yelling. The constant changes in the crowd keeps everything interesting and the calmness of the beat and synth line provide a stark counterpoint to the chaos of the crowd. IDR4 is a plodding bass line with feedback with yelled, unintelligible vocals. I was not expecting a power electronics feel here, but here we are. It works though.
Overall, this is an interesting disc. I tend to be a "everything including the kitchen sink" kind of noise person, but this disc illustrates how sometimes less is more. This disc is limited to 42 copies and weighs in at around 14 minutes.
