I was previously unfamiliar with Dawson's work, but this North Carolina musician, writer, and broadcaster is also the leader of the rock band Third Of Never. He also has two books as a humor columnist – one titled “Making Gravy in Public,” which sounds promising. The label describes this album as “straight out of the Berlin school of experimental/ambient music” and compares it to such artists as Eno, Ash Ra Temple, and Tangerine Dream. Sounds good, so let’s get into the music itself.
This is mainly guitar based experimental music. Lots of guitar drone with field recordings mixed in. Bits of voices, sounds of a barbecue, what sounds like a speech, all mixed together to create an interesting atmosphere. There's also synth drone and piano mixed in as well. Overall, this is an interesting album that does a good job of creating an atmosphere that has a cinematic feel to it. The guitar itself is often fuzzed-out in a way that often reminds me of The Durutti Column. Over all, a decent slab of ambient. This album weighs in at around 45 minutes.
