I had not heard of Sense of Self before, but that is one of the things I like about Inner Demons. All I know is that Sense of Self hails from Montreal, Québec and describes themselves as "the sum of all neglect." The liner notes are not helpful either, simply stating "Fuck alcohol and fuck classic rock," so let’s just dive in.
We start off with "Justin Trudeau Pushes Lady in Front of Train," which I expected to be much more along the lines of harsh noise. Instead, we have an interesting composition with synth and layers and layers of sound snippets and field recordings. Clattering metal, underwater synth tones, thudding machinery, heavily processed voice, and anything else they had laying around. The result is dreamlike and interesting. Next up, we have "Rotten Meat Challenge With Baby Trump," which keeps the cut-up feel going. This is heavily processed voices chopped up and rendered completely unintelligible. And there is some violin thrown in at the end for good measure. Where the previous track had a pleasant, dreamlike quality, this one is much more unsettling, aiming for a hallucinogenic bad trip vibe. Finally, "Infatuated Glory" brings it home with a calm, but slightly unnerving track, featuring buzzing, rattling, and slow moving synth work. There is a sense of tension here that would be right at home in a suspense movie.
Overall, this disc is enjoyable and an interesting excursion into cut up soundscapes. If you want something from Inner Demons that is less on the noisy side, this is well worth checking out. This album weighs in at around 20 minutes.
