"Afrofulu," the latest eclectic offering from the symbiosys of Above The Tree and Drum Ensemble Du Beat, is nothing short of a wild, sonic safari. This album, which translates to "afro trash," is a curious blend of accidental drum recordings and an aesthetic inspired by illegal car races, dusty clouds, and makeshift hot rods. If you can imagine a Blade Runner-esque dystopia set against the backdrop of the Sahara and some afro-disco clubs in some countries of Western Africa, you're halfway there.

This avant-garde project, led by the whimsical composer Marco Bernacchia (Above The Tree) and the skilled percussionist Edoardo Grisogani (Drum Ensemble Du Beat), brings a unique fusion of sounds that defy conventional genres. Their creative journey began in 2014 with "Cave_Man," but "Afrofulu" pushes boundaries even further, delivering an intense and evocative jam session that feels both fresh and nostalgic.

From the opening track "Bufalo," with its relentless rhythms and hypnotic beats - it really sounds like the obnubilated perception of a Yoruba celebration by an observer under opioids - , to the aptly named "F.C. Lampedusa," which serves as a poignant reminder of the immigrant experience, the album is a rollercoaster of emotions and soundscapes. The track "Talker X" stands out with its energetic pulse, almost as if the drums themselves are engaged in a lively conversation.

Some listeners have noted the album's ability to transport listeners to different worlds, merging the gritty reality of the modern urban landscape with the raw, primal energy of traditional African beats. This juxtaposition is not just a musical exploration but also a social commentary on the state of our world, highlighting issues of colonialism and power abuse through its vibrant, eclectic grooves.
The production, a collaborative effort between Bernacchia and Grisogani, recorded and mixed across various studios in Italy and Spain, ensures that every beat, crackle, and hum is meticulously crafted. The result is an album that is as much a work of art as it is a musical experience, challenging listeners to think and feel deeply with every track.

So, if you're ready for an auditory adventure that’s as intellectually stimulating as it is rhythmically captivating, "Afrofulu" by Above The Tree & Drum Ensemble Du Beat is your ticket. It won't be that difficult to enjoy this ride.
