The description of the artist states that "State Vector Collapse is Leif Hunneman, and an only occasionally smoking pile of home-built and/or heavily modified electronic noisemakers. Abstract soundscapes composed around themes of paradox, anxiety, and overintellectualization. Currently based in Boston MA, but has also salted the earth around both Portland OR and Burlington VT." for his day job, he "oscillates between multiple types of consulting work: some straightforward DevOps and embedded software development, some teaching for local universities and makerspaces, and some building of customized electronics (usually for regional local artists.)" Sounds like an interesting fellow, and he has been involved in a slew of bands that I had not heard of. This project seems to have been going since about 2000, so I'm surprised that I had not at least heard of this project. Just goes to show how disconnected we can be at times, even within the same scene. At any rate, let's dive into the maw and see what we find there.
This release consists of one track titled "The All-Consuming Maw of Praxis." This track is 16:19 long, and it made me wonder if this is an allusion to the 1619 project. This is noisy, but not really harsh. The sounds are constantly shifting, and it takes a few listens to catch everything. There are elements buried in the mix such that you begin wondering if it is something outside of the track that had mixed in. This keeps everything interesting and fresh. Despite the ever-present bass rumble that undergirds the track, you get the sense that all of the sounds are transitory and nothing stays put for very long. This is dark and unsettling music.
Overall, this is well done and worth picking up. This would make an excellent accompaniment to an art installation, provided that the art was dystopian and more along the lines of Giger than Monet. This album weighs in at around 16 minutes.
