The people who are waiting for a return to techno music probably will have mixed emotions listening to the fifth Ellen Allien's studio album, because on DUST you can listen to her minimal dancey experimentations (check the great "Flashy flashy") but also to her new intuitions. If "Sool" was sounding a bit cold and introspective, DUST sounds warmer and more immediate. Co-produced with Tobias Freund who's been involved in the music business as sound engineer and producer for the past 25 years, DUST finds Ellen Allien focusing on new sounds and ideas (see the use of clarinet on "My tree" and "Schlumi", guitar on "Sun the rain" and "You" and Caribbean percussions on "Huibuh") where her old minimalism is revived with the help of new influences. For example "Sun the rain" and "You", thanks to the use of bass guitar and electric guitar, are proper pop songs with a bit of new wave influences where Ellen sings with clear vocals giving to the album two sunny moments and "Schlumi" to me sounds like an industrial dance hybrid. Ellen is experimenting with new solutions and I liked it. It will be available on May the 17th on CD and double gatefold vinyl.
