It could be difficult for every band to come back after seventeen years and demonstrate to themselves and to the audience that the project has got still a sense and kicks asses. This is even more true if we think that D.A.F. are one of the modern electronic/techno fathers along with Suicide and Kraftwerk. Did they succeeded? Globally yes. First of all I must admit that (as many of you, I think) I never listened to their last album released back in 1986 and titled "First Step To Heaven", so I've got to base my comments knowing the older ones and some releases of the projects Gabi Del Gado and Robert Gorl did during these years. Gorl respect Del Gado has been more active as he released different albums since 1984 (the first of them has been "Night Full Of Tension" which contains the sigle "Darling Don't Leave Me" which had Annie Lennox as guest vocalist). Del Gado instead after releasing an album in 1983 titled "Mistress" surfaced again with the project Daf Dos in 1996 (even if he started to work to it years before with the name OPD In Operation DAF). This new album starts were the DAF of the "Fur Immer" period and the DAF DOS stopped as most of the songs have got techno and the classic band's sound influences at the same time. Of the fifteen tracks I really appreciated the second half of them (starting from "Seltsame Freunde") because in my opinion DAF found the right balance between old and new sound. A track like "Algorithmus" would be a perfect single in my opinion but maybe they opted for "Der Sheriff" because of the particular political period (the song is an anti American anthem and also the video, which you can download from their website, ends with the American flag in flames). Also tracks like "Der Prasident", "Liebeszimmer" or "Ich Bin Morgen Wieder Da" are rhythm driven songs but they have got also melodic parts or other kind of changes that help making the song interesting and powerful. "Der Sheriff", "Ich Bin Tot" or "Die Luge" are good songs based mainly on obsessive parts (I know, this has always been a distinctive mark for the band) but maybe because of the sounds, which sometimes sound too digital, the songs sound a little static. It could be only a matter of abitude but I liked songs like "Algorithmus" immediately. Anyway, this has been a good come back and I warmly advice you to check this out.
