Sleepless Droids is the electro-industrial project of Aussie Aaron Potter, and 'Dust' is the second release after 2012's 'Decision' album. Potter cites Nine Inch Nails, Pendulum, Front Line Assembly as influences, and it shows. More of a maxi-single than an EP in my opinion, 'Dust' consists of three tracks- "Dust," "Believe" and "Dust (Substance)" for a total of about 13 minutes. The title track is a good and heavy medium paced stomper, but the music kind of crushes the life out of the vocals, which peek through only in the quieter moments which are few and far between. This track reminds me of some electro-industrial music prevalent in the early 2000s. The vocals are a lot more intelligible in "Believe" which allows for some breathing space. The track makes interesting use of electronics but just doesn't have much grabbing power, and although the rhythm is kind of cool, it's just too stilted for the dance floor. Potter's vocals, while not particularly strong are better than average for this kind of music. It's the last track- "Dust (Substance)" that had the most potential to be the breakout song here, mostly due to its pulsing rhythm, but it really needed a strong chorus, bridge, hook...something to boost it up and away. Unfortunately, that never happened. Overall, not exceptional, but acceptable. I think Potter has the studio chops and talent to create something truly awesome, but that seems like it going to be somewhere down the road.
