Richard Adams, the man behind Western Edges is known for his Leeds, UK, experimental post-rock band Hood, and his Yorkshire, UK slowcore/shoegaze/semi-ambient outfit, The Declining Winter. My only experience with his Western Edges project was 'Prowess,' a slight album of 8 tracks in 27 minutes that I reviewed back in 2019. Although it seemed more of a sample platter than a fully themed album, I thought its charm and pleasantry added to its replay factor. While there is some similarity in form to 'Dependency,' I think this is a much different animal. The disappointing opener, "Page Reveals" is little more than a mid-tempo basic beat with a four-note theme (similar to the opening notes of the original Star Trek TV theme, only slower) eventually bolstered with supporting chords. That's it. Weak. "Glass Dawn" uses a slower slapback echo to give a sautillé bowing technique sound. There is bass, but somewhat minimal which could have been more moving with an opportunity to develop an interesting sub-melody. Less than halfway through a percussion track emerges becoming more clattersome and louder over time. This is one of those pieces that really could have been turned into something epic, but just missed the mark on its potential. Much of the rest of the album consists of tracks with a muted heartbeat kick for rhythm, soft pads with a couple of chord changes, the occasional use of synth for repeating riffs and effects, and bass, which, truth be told, could have been better. To me, this seems like an album that was hastily compiled without much forethought. I wasn't impressed. As per usual with Sound In Silence releases, limited to 100 hand-stamped, hand-numbered copies, or the digital version. The deluxe version is apparently already sold out.
