Continuing on with our weekend noise-fest we have Joseph Roemer's Macronympha side-project, OVMN (Optimum Volume Maximum Noise) and we begin with 'Amerika: Die Ewige Senkgrube' which is a compilation reissue of split cassette releases from 1996/1997 with Kadef and with Audible XXY respectively. Roemer, of Pittsburgh, PA, is very well known in the noise community, running the Mother Savage Noise Productions label and having been involved with numerous other noise-producing entities of which Macronympha is the most famous. If the albums I'm reviewing here are a typical indication of OVMN's oeuvre, then this is the pedal-to-the-metal of harsh noise. Just two lengthy tracks on this one - "Schwulstig Politik" (44:54) and "Corrupt Third Party Power Lights-Out Plug In Standing On The Border With Two Guns" (30:54). The first pulls no punches slamming you into a brutal wall of noise from the get-go, but you get a psychedelic music break at the two-minute mark, then a weird drum rhythm loop at around 10:40, another strange (distorted) musical interlude at 18:00, but none of them last very long, then it's back to the exploding inevitable. Later there are other events - slowed down voice and later another (distorted) music interlude, yet always returning to the sonic barrage. Unlike track 1, track 2 offers no alternate sonic interludes or reprieve from the sonic onslaught. Oh there is variation in form, texture, intensity and frequencies, but that's about it. You can either sit there and take it, or turn it off. That's about it. For me, this is as unpleasant as it gets in the power noise genre, and those that appreciate it should be thrilled.
