The liner notes to this album begin: “Floating miasmic vapors. A chorus of mystery monks. Flights of Angels. Clouds and swirls of echoes. Weightless sounds that swirl and eddy and carry you downstream on your timeless journey to sleep, to death, to birth?” This is the introduction to this album by Minnesota-based artist Philip Blackburn, who is joined on this endeavor by vocalist Ryland Angel. If this sounds like a heavy introduction, keep in mind that Blackburn has a Ph.D. in music, so one can expect this to be a bit more academic than a lot of what we review.

This was recorded in the cisterns beneath Istanbul and consists of two tracks. The first track, “Out Beyond,” is heavy drone with didgeridoo and synth mixed with poetry by Rumi sung by Ryland Angel. This is peaceful and reminds me of Arcanta's work. The second track, “Justinian Intonations,” takes up most of the disc and weighs in at over 50 minutes. This is heavy synth drone that would be right at home in a sci-fi suspense soundtrack. The track shifts in both tone and intensity, and ebbs and flows. About 35 minutes in, there's some vocals mixed in but that's more for atmosphere which kind of adds to the complexity of the track. Overall it was a rather soothing track and makes for a good soundtrack for reading or just driving around. This disc weighs in at around 55 minutes.
