Black Galaxie is the solo noise project of Canadian artist Nolan Hildebrand. Man, I don't even know how to describe this, so I'll let the artist do it for me: “Sounds of hyperactive electronic noisecore and dizzying drum rhythms are contrasted with introspective experimental improvisations making for a brutally visceral experience. In the spirit of Musique Concrète traditions, Black Galaxie uses recorded sounds as raw material to create dynamic “tape tracks” that are accompanied by drum kit. Once the drum kit is abandoned, the “tape tracks” melt and dissolve into experimental improvisations featuring digital and analogue oscillators, live processing of drums and cymbals with contact mics via guitar pedals, vocalizations, flute, children's music boxes, found objects, and live turntables.” Sounds good, so let's get into it.

This is lo-fi as hell and all over the map. There are three major tracks with two interludes. The interludes are more atmospheric with some noisy drone, and everything is grist for the mill here. There's recorder, 8-bit video game analog weirdness, some random yelling and screaming, and with the main tracks, the drums are beating the crap out of everything and the guitars are crazy, and it's a hell of a lot of fun. You get the sense that this would be a great act to see live because it's almost a sure thing that at least one instrument would get broken in the course of the show. Not something for everyday listening but definitely something for a particular mood. You'll know that mood when you hear it.
