Mai 12 is a noise project from Thessaloniki, Greece, and currently resides on the tiny volcanic island of Nisyros, Greece. According to the liner notes, this is a duo consisting of Karl Grümpe and Rene p.g., but aside for a previous split that I reviewed with Veronica Moser, I had not heard much from this project. The title translates out to "We are the terrorists, against the tourists." This is a concept album of sorts. According to the notes, this album “took inspiration by observing the dialectics and mentality of the tourist; a person who's needs of new 'experiences' is fulfilled by capitalism and the consumer mentality. Even 'alternative' tourism is nothing more than an alternative consumer option. With an almost neo-colonial approach towards the place and it's natives, tourists infest a land, strip it from all they can get and then leave without anything but the fulfillness of the consumption of images, food, landscapes and anything in between. Their relation to the visiting place stops there.” This is a lot to live up to, so let's dig into the music and see how this shapes up.

This set consists of 4 3" discs, but to be honest, they each sound a lot alike to me, like there was one 80 minute track that was cut into four pieces. This is a lot of low end bass rumble with some static. This sounds a lot like being on a long flight while the pilot has left the microphone on, but not saying anything. There are bits of feedback really low in the mix. It is not until the last few seconds of the fourth disc that it changes. Not really my cup of noise tea, but it does make for pleasant background noise.
