I had not heard of this duo before, but this is the work of Jeremy Keenan and Alex Abalos. This seems to be their first release from 2006. The label describes the band thus: “A combination of tightly fused electronic rhythms, textures, and manipulated field recordings with airy, crystalline guitars always present, Upside Down Umbrella offers up a varied mix of rainy day soundtracks, somber strains, and buoyant, undulating cadences.”

The cover art is whimsical and was not what I expected when I put in the CD. The music itself is an interesting mix of slow synth washes and analog drone mixed with punchy beats. Much like their label mate PU22L3, the beats are not always danceable but it is interesting. There are times where to get a bit more glitchy such as on “Trepid,” and some moments of disembodied voice on “Sweet As Sweet” that deviate from the norm, but overall it maintains the same strategy with varying degrees of variation. One of the things that makes this album work is that all the trucks are long enough to kind of sink into. There's a lot going on within the tracks which also keeps it interesting. This album weighs in at 66 minutes.
