I was familiar with Fabio Selvafiorita’s work with Meerkat, but this was my first exposure to his solo work. The label describes his work thus: “Selvafiorita’s acousmatic music investigates the complexities between in-formal abstractions and Pathos in sound manifestations. Described by his author as an “old fashioned symphonic electronic poem” THE FALL explores a spiritual transmutation where biographical sound marks collide with intangible sounds from the uncanny.” With liner notes quoting from Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy (Purgatorio XX.127–9), you get a feel for what you are in for, so let’s get right into it.

We open with “Prologue: columns, gyre and vortices,” which is an interesting electroacoustic track. Field recordings with clattering machinery and boxes falling, mixed with tape hiss and other noises. This is what it sounds like when you make a full length track of incidental music.

“Ascent of the Stone (GLORIA)” is heavy string drone mixed with the same kind of clattering from the previous track. The drone subsides, to be replaced by eerie soundscapes mixed with 8-bit sci-fi sound effects and bits of processed voice.

“Convexities, among the ruins” keeps the cinematic feel going. This one moves slowly and deliberately, in contrast to the sometimes spastic feel of the previous two. Rather nice, and almost peaceful.

Finally, at almost 25 minutes, “GesÄnge der Frühe” is the longest track on the disc. It’s a fun ride with a lot of variety throughout the piece. It has enough going on to keep it engaging, but with enough continuity to keep it together. Everything shifts slowly; there are no sudden movements here.

I am always looking for albums that fit the bill of "experimental music for people who are afraid of experimental music, and this one would fit the bill quite nicely. It works well for those of us who are well steeped in weird music too. Well done. This album weighs in at around 60 minutes.
