Daniel Kordik is based in between London (UK) and Bratsilava (Slovakia) and his bio notes that his music “spans across three domains: electronic music, free improvisations and field recordings.” I was previously familiar with this artist’s work as part of the duo Jamka (with Monika Subrtova), but this is my first exposure to his solo work.

We open with “Ranné spevy,” which has roosters crowing and the sounds of crickets chirping, someone singing, and birdsongs. In contrast to the minimalist beat-driven work of Jamka, we have here a series of well done field recordings. In most of these, there is a sense of being somewhere or doing something that is brought about by the sounds around you. “Zvlnenia” has waves crashing on the shore and birds squawking; you get the sense that someone is on a boat. “Skryz a škáry” sounds like line noise and bits of static, then goes into minimal crackling and wind noise. “Útroba” brings back the water sounds, like being in a boat or in a bathtub with someone splashing around. “Diaky” feels likes like you are standing by the side of the road as cars go by. Finally, we have “Uspávanky,” which sounds like insect noises. The effect is a kind of grinding noise, which is interesting, but doesn't seem to go anywhere.

Overall, if you enjoy field recordings, this is definitely one worth looking into. One could see this working well as background noise, as nothing in it is terribly jarring, and things flow naturally. The sound is really clean and you get the feel of actually being there, which seems to be what Kordik was going for. This album weighs in at 39:34 and is limited to 77 copies.
