Platonoff hails from Russia and does some interesting noise work. I had previously reviewed the previous Platonoff release on Inner Demons (The Grapes of Wrath), so I was interested to see how this one differed and evolved from the previous release. This disc consists of two tracks, so let’s dive in.
“Break Through the Steel” opens with some junk noise with clattering metal and feedback, but then shifts to some unstable synth drone and a slow beat punctuated with clanging machinery. This becomes increasingly intense with more noise layers added on over time. I especially like how it all seems to fall apart at the end. In my previous review, I described one of the tracks on the Grapes of Wrath as “like listening to a Rube Goldberg machine working in slow motion,” and the feel is similar here.
We finish off the disc with “Militaristic Rage,” which begins with a much more ominous feel, with low drone and stuttering static. A beat comes in, but this is even slower than the previous one, punctuated by bits of garbled radio transmissions and screeching feedback.
Overall, this is another strong showing from Platonoff. If you like your noise to be heavily industrial and sound like the smoking crater of a bombed out factory, this is one you will want to pick up. Well done. This album weighs in at around 18 minutes.
