"Marta Mist is a musical collective based around a core of Gavin Miller (aka, worriedaboutsatan) and Sophie Green (ex member of Her Name Is Calla), based in Bradford, UK. Since their formation in 2010, they have released two albums, two EPs, four singles and two compilations on labels such as Time Released Sound, Hibernate, Heat Death Records and This Is It Forever, or self-released. 'Eyes Like Pools,' Marta Mist’s third full-length album, consists of five compositions with a total duration of something more than 38 minutes. Utilizing layers of haunting violins, delicate guitar swells, airy synth textures, distant piano melodies, hypnotizing drones, deep bass lines, electronic glitches and field recordings, Marta Mist create an atmospheric album that perfectly mixes cinematic ambient and minimal post-rock."
The preceding was verbatim from the Sound In Silence one-sheet that accompanied the CD. The general description isn't far off the mark, but let's get down to some specifics. "Gosdspeed Little Doodle" is the shortest piece on the album at only a little over 2 minutes. It has an endlessly arpeggiated brief piano sequence as its base with gossamer atmospherics and only a few other repeated notes, which is really all it needs. Wonderful in its simplicity. "Always On" is the longest track at 14:20 and it's primarily a violin drone piece, which becomes violins, and has an Eastern flavour. It's not just violin though; other heavier drones are also at work, along with some string plinking and plucking. Droney as it is, it's also interesting how Gavin and Sophie conjure some melodicism out of this thick stew, and they certainly do, even if it is a bit overly-long as it fades into something else.
I found "Lie On Your Side" to be truly weird but wonderful. It starts out as this semi-slow 4-note figure with a tail that made me think of two love-sick cats. This gradually becomes elaborated on with more violins and a moving sustained bass, so now there are no tonal gaps in the music. Out of nowhere a sub-melody arises and now there is a symphony of sound. The fog of sound is so thick the players can no longer see each other. It is multiplied exponentially until it implodes upon itself. The second short piece, "I've Drawn You A Map" has some okay atmospherics but is really a transitional piece more than anything else. Second longest track, "We Have Business To Attend To" (13:40) has a sweeter but more melancholy ambience than "Always On," and it builds brilliantly over time with additional ethereal elements, as it morphs into something rather different with a hazy but achingly beautiful melody. I have to say I was emotionally affected, and that doesn't happen often in these reviews. Limited edition of 200 handmade and hand-numbered collectible copies. Strongly recommended.
