Seems like only yesterday that I said "Jon Attwood is back again with his ambient guitar project Yellow6..." and here we are again. This guy puts out consistently very good guitar ambient albums that are interesting and easily digestible. 'Civil Twilight' is 8 tracks in about 65 minutes (are SIS releases now getting longer?) Opening track "Stand" blurs the line between acoustic and electric guitar, lightly treated and ruminating on a repeating medium-slow riff. The fuzzed-out "Slowly Brighter" may give the impression of doom metal lite at first, but that's only the extended intro. Minimal percussion move this piece right along, and I love the repeating chordal structure. Somehow, it feels nostalgic and vaguely psychedelic. "Evil Twin" takes its sweet time to unfold, and based only on a few notes and a couple of chords, my interest waned a few minutes into the eight of its length.
"M" is the longest track at 10:42, and while ambient at first, becomes more fully formed into a melodic musical piece. It was nice but seemed less consistent with the ambient nature of the other tracks on the album. Even with an underpinning of gently rhythmic guitar chords, "Growing Smaller" is a real sleepy-time tune. I had a hard time to keep from yawning and closing my eyes. Attwood uses a similar approach on "Keep Track" but I did not feel the somnambulism in this one. The last two compositions on the album - "Washed Away Every Trace" and "Until The Next Time" were nice enough but did not move the needle one way or another to make much of a difference. It sounds as if Attwood's inspiration is flagging a bit and he's relying on what he's already been doing. A good album, just not a great one.
