'Windows' is the fourth full length album and second on the Sound In Silence label by Marta Mist, a musical collective based around a core of Gavin Miller (aka, worriedaboutsatan) and Sophie Green (ex member of Her Name Is Calla), based in Bradford, UK. I really liked their previous effort, 'Eyes Like Pools' but 'Windows' sounds very different. While initial track "Allons-y Mon Ami!" is strictly ambient in nature and sets the mysterious tone, "Patches" which follows, sounds like an instrumental underground psychedelic band with bass, drums, and ambient and melodic elements. Very cool! "Puzzle" continues in this vein sounding a bit shoegazey. The incorporation of more bass and drums into the sound of Marta Mist is really giving this project an identity to be reckoned with, and "Otra Vez" proves it. While it is predominantly improvisational ambient, the structure Miller and Green employ makes everything fit perfectly. "Good Luck, Amigo" reminds me of the quieter instrumental moments of The Durutti Column, but better. "C'est Tout, Les Amis" is the perfect wind-down for this stellar album that deserves more acclaim than it will probably ever get. You really need to hear it for yourself, so head to Bandcamp and treat yourself to a Christmas present you won't want to return.
