Substak is the work of Athens (Greece) -based artist Kostas Staikos. He describes this work as “Ambient, Dub, Dub Techno, Minimal, & Minimal Techno.” This is my introduction to his work, and this is a short one, so let's dive in.
We kick it off with “Never Existed,” which has some warbling bass lines and a relentless hi-hat cymbal that gives it an interesting feel. The overall atmosphere is unsettling. Nicely done. “Society Has Failed” keeps a similar feel with hi-hat and a bell-like noise over bass drone that has been put into a grinder and then dumped out onto a concrete shop floor.
Overall, this is a nice taster for what could be part of a soundtrack for a suspense film. It would have to be in black and white, of course. This album weighs in at just over 11 minutes, so it is rather short, but it definitely left me wanting to hear more.
