Another release from art rock project Lore City, from Portland, Oregon, the duo of Laura Mariposa Williams (vocals, keyboard, guitar) and Eric Angelo Bessel (percussion, keyboard, guitar). This time it's a 2-track vinyl 7" (they call an EP but it's really a long single) of some of the most unlikely music you will ever find on a U.S. 7" vinyl, titled 'Under Way'. The A-side is called "Animate" and is basically Laura's voice singing in a whispy, hypnotic, nearly ritualistic fashion swathed in reverb, with sustained synth chords, piano, some guitar notes and background percussion track. To some extent it reminds me of the Cocteau Twins, and/or material you might have found on one of those '90s 'Heavenly Voices' compilations. The B-side, "Very Body" is an instrumental track of ambient drone. Simple, and not much to it.

I'm sort of mystified why Lore City chose these two track to release as a 7" as they seem more along the lines of album tracks than a single. Both tracks are nice and ethereal but not compelling, but I urge you to buy the vinyl record (over the digital version) anyway because I think 'Under Way' will become a collector's item...in time. It's just so unusual. I'm more interested to see what album they will put out next.
